By maintaining good oral hygiene, you can prevent tartar, plaque, and other oral issues from surfacing and help keep a clean and beautiful smile. After all, a healthy, appealing smile can be your calling card to the world.
Unfortunately, ignoring oral care, forgoing treatments and regular dental screenings, can lead to severe dental problems and eventually leave you with no option but undergoing painful and expensive oral surgeries.
To help you avoid fundamental errors like these, MarPark Dental Care has put together a list of the most common mistakes people make with their oral health.
1. Waiting till it hurts.
Fear of the dentist, finances, and priorities all contribute to not seeing a dentist regularly and waiting until the problem has manifested to visit a dental clinic. Regular visits to the dental clinic mean that the dentists can detect issues early and save you from expensive treatments and procedures. It also keeps you from experiencing pain which reinforces your fear of going to see a dentist.
2. Forgoing treatment.
The longer you wait for treatment, the more costly it gets. Patients need to ask themselves what is important: their teeth that help them function for the rest of their lives or that fancy car that depreciates immediately once they take it out of the car dealership?
3. Failure to perform basic oral hygiene.
Due to time constraints and poor dexterity people fail to keep basic oral hygiene. Patients can visit the dentist every six months at best, and during that time they can do very little to help if dental problems have rapidly worsened. By regularly keeping our mouth and teeth clean at home, we can reduce our oral problems. It’s also recommended that parents help their children with brushing and flossing until they can do a good job on their own.
4. Forgoing flossing.
Many think that flossing doesn’t make much difference to oral hygiene if they brush regularly. Flossing helps to clean between the teeth in areas that your toothbrush can’t reach, so dentists always recommend flossing.
5. Believing that dentists only take care of teeth.
When a patient comes in for a regular check-up, dentists also assess their head and neck for any anomalies. This is an excellent way to catch oral or other health-related issues early on.
6. Thinking that dentures or crowns and bridges do not need regular maintenance.
Even if patients wear complete dentures, regular checkups are essential because dentists don’t just look at teeth. Decay and bone loss can still happen under crowns and bridges if you don’t take care of them.
